Meeting with clients, project management, site management, health and safety were all experienced, and all of which I have applied in the short time I have been working. The construction site field course, gave me a great knowledge of how projects work in the construction phase and the processes that are involved. The integrated design projects, 4 in total, gave me experience of looking at the holistic, multi-disciplinary nature of the engineering projects, and working together to coordinate a design that works for all disciplines. Materials taught me about bituminous materials and road construction. I undertook Transport Engineering II, which included highway design such as road geometry and junctions. What experiences at Leeds do you think have particularly helped with your career/will help with your future career? We also have smaller maintenance and improvement contracts which sometimes given tasks, usually survey work including a night-time survey (working behind the cones!). These tasks include, report writing, research, CAD, highway design, coordination with other disciplines (environment, geotechnics, structures, rail, technology and lighting). My role is to undertake a variety of tasks for a large Major Project. I work in the highways part of the team and as a team we design roads and improvements of roads for Highways England, the company responsible for the strategic highway network in England. I am based in Leeds in the highways and bridges discipline.

WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff are a large multi-disciplinary company formed by the merger of WSP and Parsons Brinckerhoff in 2015. What company are you working for, what is your role and what does it involve? My work has been supplemented with surveys and other tasks for some of the other projects that we have on. From day one, I started work on 2 large road widening schemes, in their early stages. I am signed up for a three year graduate training scheme and an ICE training agreement, which gives me a structured approach to achieving ICE chartered status. I am in the highways major projects team and our client is Highways England. I am currently working for a global multi-disciplinary engineering consultancy in highways and bridges department. What have you been doing since finishing your studies? What are you doing in terms of your career?
